"The internet and chain stores have taken over the industry," the pet shop announced on social media.
"It's not easy for a small business to survive. A big part of our life will be gone but we must move forward."
A closing sale is in effect until the store's last day on April 15.
"We will miss our customers who have become our family," the store wrote.
We are so grateful for everyone who works there who always took the time to answer our questions and care about pets as if they were their own.
Longtime customers have fond memories of visiting the shop as kids, watching employees feed the snakes, clean the fish tanks and share laugh with the owners.
"My uncle bought many parakeets and canarys for promotional giveaways at his cleaners in NYC. When Mr. Kazimir lost his legs, my uncle Walter, taught him tricks to help him walk better. He had lost his legs too," one former customer wrote.
"Gold fish were always outside the pet shop with water running for years. Halloween brought the plastic bags of free gold fish."
Some said the store was among the few they felt welcome in, thanks to Mr. K.
"This literally breaks my heart," another customer wrote. "We are so grateful for everyone who works there who always took the time to answer our questions and care about pets as if they were their own.
"We will miss you tremendously and wish you all the best!"
